What is Magnetotherapy?
Magnetotherapy is a physical therapy based on the application of specific magnetic fields on the human body. It can be used to treat pain, inflammation and swelling. Clinical studies have demonstrated that magnetotherapy can be effective in the treatment of osteoporosis and for promoting healing and repair of bone fractures and soft tissue injuries.
ASA offer magnetotherapy devices which work by generating pulsed magnetic fields at extremely low frequency (ELF) and at low intensity. These fields are able to pass through the body, acting on all tissues (muscle, bone, nerve, epithelial, etc.). They are effective even at depth, are not invasive and are completely painless.
How Does Magnetotherapy Work?
ELF fields cause ions to move in biological tissues (image 1), creating ionic currents. Ions moving across cell membranes leads to calcium influx and the positive secondary events which follow this (image 2), stimulation of the mitochondria increasing ATP production and activation of oxygen leading to restoration of basal metabolic conditions
In addition to these effects, magnetotherapy can mimic the piezoelectric effect which essentially signals the need for osteogenesis. When a bone is bent or compressed, positive and negative charges become displaced, indicating that bony repair work is required! Bone regeneration occurs where negative charges accumulate (image 1).
Varying ELF charges creates a similar effect therefore triggering osteogenesis. For further information on Magnetotherapy and the equipment available, please contact sales@celticsmr.co.uk
