CPD with CelticSMR

At Celtic SMR we pride ourselves on the high level of training and support we offer our MLSⓇ laser users. From the initial training given, we provide opportunities for people to access support whenever they need it. However, there are lots of resources available for practitioners who would like to extend and deepen their own knowledge of photobiomodulation (PBM) as a treatment modality.

ASA, who manufacture the MLSⓇ lasers have a research and training library available on their website with research papers and case studies readily accessible.

Celtic SMR Healthcare have a number of webinar recordings which include lessons in treating specific conditions or areas of the body and more, currently available on their website under the ‘Healthcare CPD’ button. There are some exciting changes and upgrades to the set up for accessing these recordings and courses coming very soon!

If you join the British Medical Laser Association (BMLA), you can access support and advise as well as the Lasers in Medical Science journal. You will require a referee to be able to join the BMLA. Please contact Kirsten at ksinclair@celticsmr.co.uk and she can act as a referee for you.

The World Association for Photobiomodulation Therapy (WALT) offer access to The Journal of Photobiomodulation, Photomedicine and Laser Surgery when you become a member and access to their website with membership benefits being described as “The World Association for Photobiomodulation Therapy boasts a multinational membership that includes the world’s leading experts in all forms of treatment. WALT aims to provide and accessible platform to expand the body of knowledge through clinical & laboratory research, and encourage international co-operation and interaction for Laser Therapists of all disciplines.”

The Limburg Oncological Laser Institude (LOwLIght) have some very interesting studies into the use of PBM in supportive cancer care, looking into the safety of use in these patients and the effects of PBM to reduce or prevent unwanted side effects of cancer treatment. You can read about them and their research at www.lowlight.org.

There are also numerous free to access databases including PubMed  https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov and BMJ Open https://bmjopen.bmj.com amongst others.

There are numerous sources available for PBM research through afore mentioned resources as well as Celtic SMR’s ‘sister’ companies in America and Australia beyond. We encourage you to utilise them and learn as much as you can about this fantastic treatment option which can make a huge difference for your patients. A broad knowledge serves to increase practitioner confidence and treatment efficacy.

It’s worth noting that when researching photobiomodulation, or laser therapy, there is a very wide nomenclature which includes:

  • Photobiomodulation (PBMT)
  • Photobiostimulation
  • Lasertherapy
  • Monochromatic light therapy
  • Low-level lasertherapy(LLLT)
  • Low level light therapy(lllt)
  • Low-intensity laser therapy
  • Cold laser therapy
  • Class IV lasertherapy
  • High intensity laser therapy (HILT)

Therefore, you may need to vary your search terms to fine the widest range of research around a particular topic.

At Celtic SMR, we encourage our laser users to join us on our monthly webinars (usually the first Wednesday of the month at 7:30pm) which cover a range of topics and always have space to take questions from laser users at any point of their career as a PBM practitioner, whether brand new or experienced. We also offer clinical support from our team of experienced practitioners whenever you need it be it around choosing your treatment parameters, a specific condition or patient or just a bit of top up knowledge. If you’d like to take advantage of that, please contact us to let us know and we can get something organised for you as soon as possible.

The knowledge around PBM therapy is a wide and rapidly growing area. It’s exciting and worth staying up to date, gaining a well rounded knowledge of PBM as well as the MLSⓇ laser itself.
